My journey with autism, while incredibly challenging, has shaped my understanding and approach in profound ways. Twenty years ago, I didn’t fully grasp the complexities of autism or how to navigate its challenges. As Darius faced numerous health issues, I embraced a healthy, individualized approach to autism, recognizing that, despite the difficulties, autism also brings unique abilities, strengths, and talents that can truly flourish when nurtured. This realization inspired me to create Championing Autism, an organization dedicated to helping individuals showcase their talents. I developed an alternative curriculum for Darius that catered to his specific needs and passions, particularly his musical talent. This approach allowed him to thrive and demonstrated how tailored support can make a significant difference. Championing Autism is my way of bridging the gap in understanding and celebrating autism. My goal is to create spaces where individuals with autism are recognized for their abilities and given the chance to shine. By focusing on their potential and promoting a healthy lifestyle, I aim to empower and uplift those with autism, celebrating their unique contributions to the world.
I’m Sel, mother of Darius, a 21-year-old with autism, and a passionate advocate for nutrition. My book, Food Matters: Unlocking the Autism Plate, underscores the vital role of nutrition in improving health outcomes. My journey began with Darius’s health challenges and autism, leading me to explore holistic approaches beyond conventional treatments. I discovered that the first step to supporting him was focusing on a bio-individualized nutrition lifestyle. Alongside this, a hands-on homeschool with an individualized and unique curriculum greatly improved his quality of life. This transformation inspired me to co-found Championing Autism, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering individuals with autism to embrace their unique strengths and talents and thrive. Championing Autism is not just for Darius—it’s for all moms to see their children’s potential and nurture them through a bio-individualized nutrition lifestyle. Our goal is to help individuals with autism become active contributors to society, providing the support and opportunities needed for them to truly thrive.

Darius was diagnosed with autism at the age of three, facing significant challenges in language and social thinking. The school district deemed him unfit for mainstream education, suggesting institutionalization due to his difficulties. His early childhood was filled with struggles, as he battled various health issues, including a compromised immune system, asthma, febrile seizures, and numerous food and environmental allergies and sensitivities. Yet, as his mother, I always held on to the memory of Darius as a happy child, radiating with the most beautiful smile. That smile became my motivation to support him in overcoming the challenges of autism and to help him grow into a functional, independent young man. Today, Darius is thriving in ways I once only dreamed of. He enjoys surfing, an activity that brings him joy and confidence, and he participates in a book club where he reads and shares stories that resonate with him. This integrated approach to learning has not only enriched his vocabulary and thinking skills but also fostered a sense of community and belonging. Darius’s journey is truly inspiring. His resilience in overcoming challenges and his ability to embrace life with joy serve as a reminder of the strength that lies within each of us. Watching him thrive fills me with hope and motivation, encouraging me to believe that, with the right support and love, anyone can overcome obstacles and lead a fulfilling life.
