A Larger Vision of Advocacy: Changing the Narrative of Autism
"Autism knows no borders, no race, no ethnicity, and no culture.
Yet in so many communities, children are still judged by what people see on the outside before anyone takes the time to understand what they may be experiencing inside.
Taking Negussu’s Voice and the Sensory Experience beyond borders was deeply meaningful to me. I had the opportunity to sit with children, listen to them, and meet them exactly where they were. When I asked what autism meant to them, I heard words like disability and disorder.
Those answers stayed with me. I wanted them to walk away seeing beyond those words and seeing the child first. A child who feels, communicates, learns, and experiences the world in their own way.
This advocacy is especially close to my heart because, in our own community, stigma, fear of judgment, and shame can keep families behind closed doors. We need to change that. Families should feel safe to step forward, speak openly, and know that their children belong. Our children deserve more than awareness. They deserve to be understood, included, accepted, and valued for who they are.
What began as a story became advocacy in action, reminding us that understanding autism can transcend differences, change perspectives, and create acceptance wherever the message travels.
And perhaps that is where real change begins. One story, one child, one family, and one person willing to understand differently. We all have a role in changing the narrative of autism." Sel Seyoum

Period care is a basic human right! But for many women in Ethiopia, especially those with autism, it’s still out of reach. Autism can make it harder to understand, communicate, and manage menstruation, especially without access to products or proper education. We’re hosting a Feminine Product Drive to support women with autism in Ethiopia with the care and accessibility they deserve.
